Hello my lovelies. I hope you’re all well today. I spent the day mooching around. I started off my day stepping out for breakfast. I love going out for breakfast. And breakfast with a group of people is always fun. This morning there were just the two of us.
I spent the afternoon catching up on some paperwork at a slow and measured pace. I did a bit of printing to top up the beginners info packs. I gathered all the stuff I will need to take with me tomorrow to Stitchin’ Heaven. I finished watching an on-line quilting class. And then I went on to finish off the written instructions for hand quilting. I had planned on doing some fine hand sewing but I was suffering from a sinus headache so I took some meds and waited for them to take effect. In the meantime I watched an episode of Madam Secretary and had a short telephone meeting with my colleague.
Today I’m going to ask you all a question. The question results from writing instructions for hand quilting. One of the topics I cover in my hand quilting class is using a quilting hoop and the reasons. So the question is: do you use a quilting hoop when you hand quilt?
There are different kinds of quilting hoops. And they come in different shapes and sizes. These are my three hoops …..
And my favourite is this one …..
This is how it works …..
Have a look at the stitches it helps me produce …..

Even after 21 years of quilt making my stitches are not perfectly spaced and sized but I’m happy with my work nonetheless. It’s taken me a long time to accept my work, warts and all. For the most part my quilts are made to be used. I do NOT make show quilts. I make quilts because I love making quilts. Hand quilting is a lovely quiet pursuit; relaxing and perfect for unwinding after a busy day.
I use a hoop when I hand quilt and when I embroider because I find I get better stitches. Also it keeps the backing from pleating and lumping up. So I’ll ask my question again, do you use a hoop when you hand quilt and if so why? Please leave a comment.
So although I haven’t done much sewing today (I’ll try to get some done this evening) I have had a pretty productive day. I have been looking thru new colouring books which are full of inspiration. The patterns and designs remind me of Freemotion Quilting and I don’t dare add colour for fear that I will ruin the inspiration.
So for this evening, this very happy longarm quilter will hopefully be doing some fine hand appliqué work to get me in the zone for Friday and Saturdays classes. I hope you have a super cosy evening doing something you truly enjoy. Until you read me again,
Happy stitching. ♥ ♥
